5 weeks old

I cannot believe we are at the 5-week mark already. After such a shaky first couple of weeks, it's been so much fun ever since. Not to mention so unexpectedly easy compared to my first litters of 7 and then 9. In fact, when the puppies were about 3 days old, Jay came into the puppy room, looked into the box containing 5 tiny wigglers and said, "Where's the rest of them?"

I've been determined not to teach these puppies to scream at people who enter the room. I really didn't want a repeat of the cacophony the last lot used to make each morning when I came downstairs. To date, they're staying pretty quiet when I first come downstairs and sort out the other dogs.

Of course, the litter of 9 constituted twice the lung-power, and it's still early days. However, we're working on ignoring the cutest thing in the room when we first enter. It's good for the puppies and a useful lesson to take home with the youngsters when they leave here. Puppies need to learn that the world doesn't actually revolve around them and that they are not the most important person in the household. Tricky, that one. I've yet to see a 8- or 10-week-old puppy who was not the most interesting thing in any household.

Anyway, so far so good.

And, so, to the 5-week photos. I have been informed by a member or two of the Facebook Lapphund community that Jay & I are not the only ones who struggle to take good photos of the puppies standing at this age. Reassuring! Nonetheless, this week we have managed to join the 'them' who display lovely standing photos. Ours are not as good as 'theirs', obviously, but we persevere.

The decisions have now been made as to which puppy is going where, so I'm also unveiling their new names (pending KC approval, that is) - ta da!

2Toes: Infindigo Tuisku Minna
Pet name 'Minna' - a girl's name

2Tone: Infindigo Tuisku Kallio
Pet name 'Kallio' - meaning 'rock'

GreyWolf: Infindigo Tuisku Kesä
Pet name 'Kesä' - meaning 'summer'

Dino: Infindigo Tuisku Usko
(How's that one for a tongue-twister?)
Pet name 'Usko' - meaning 'belief' or 'faith'

Butterfly: Infindigo Tuisku Piia
Pet name 'Jaana' - a girl's name
(It's nice to have a puppy in the family called Jaana. Maija has a sister whose kennel name is Jaana, but she is called Sybil! Hence, Jaana's kennel name shall be Piia. Just don't ask how I will distinguish between Piia-Jaana and Jaana-Sybil in future blog posts...)

busy

There's no let up around here. Seems I'm busier this time around with only 5 puppies in the house than I was last time with 9. Maybe because with 9 I didn't try to do anything else and this time I'm trying to do everything else.

3 of the puppies' homes have been decided and their names have been picked. Until someone changes their mind again, that is.

Most breeders will pick their litter's kennel names and register them with the Kennel Club straight away. No fuss, no bother, and the registration certificate comes back in good time to go to the new owners with the puppy.

I, on the other hand, like to give my puppies' families some input into choosing their names. With the last litter, I knew who would be having males and who females, and they were all the same colour, so I was able to just register 'these 5' female black & tans and 'these 4' male black & tans. It's a bit trickier this time, so I won't get the registration done until this weekend when the final names are determined. That means the certificates will probably be late. But worth it, I think.

All the puppies in the litter will have the same first two names: Infindigo Tuisku, the first being my kennel name and the second being the Finnish word for 'snowstorm'. I think it's nice to have a name common to the whole litter to identify the family. The litter of 9 were called 'Monta', which is Finnish for 'many' because of the size of the litter. The Tuisku bunch will be named in honour of the terrible - and unusual - weather Kate & I faced to take Taika to France and back for her date.

But just wait until you hear the given names. I really like them all, but it's going to make their full monikers real tongue-twisters. What fun! No, really.

This is all dependent on the Kennel Club accepting the proposed names. They do have the right to veto anything a breeder proposes, although I understand this is only done in the case where a name is very similar to another dog. It hasn't happened to me yet, so hopefully we'll all be lucky again this time.

More visitors this weekend, starting this afternoon, so to keep you going, here's a treat or two.

The wine box is not only a great toy, but it also makes a terrific 'castle' onto which a puppy can climb and then leap off onto the back of her unsuspecting brother... I really must try to get that on film, but they've been a bit too quick thus far. In the meantime, 2Tone has discovered another great use for the wine box:

How cute is that! We have several photos of him snuggled asleep in there - it's his favorite.

Since the puppies have moved downstairs, Granny Neka is delighted that she's finally allowed to help out. Here are mum & babies with granny on hand to help clean up. She's excellent at licking porridge (or other unmentionable stickiness) from the puppies' faces and coats while Taika is busy nursing - or otherwise occupied playing with Maija.

Neka is also very good at playing with the puppies and she has already started to teach them how to play with toys. The first video shows her with the squeaky and it looks so much fun even Taika decides to join in. Of course, in these games there's always the temptation for the older dogs to simply try and steal the puppy toys away to play with the other older dogs...

In the second granny is having a game with GreyWolf.

Apologies - there are voices on these films interfering with the full appreciation of puppy noises.

more toys

When the puppies turned 4 weeks old they moved downstairs to see the world from the safety of their pen in our living room. Today was their first foray into the outdoor pen, and they had lunch al fresco. But the wind was a bit chilly so they didn't stay out there long.

Here is the gang shortly after moving into their pen, settling in and getting to grips with their new toys. Note poor little 2Tone getting picked on by all his sisters. In the end I had to stop filming to rescue him. Awww...

toys

The puppies are really interacting with their toys now. They're growling at them, pouncing & chewing on them & dragging them all around.

Wine boxes make great chew-toys-come-climbing-frames - fun for the whole family!

As you can see, sometimes the most unlikely items make the best toys.

A poor photo, but excellent subject: 2Tone dragging paper all over the pen while Taika & Maija look on in envy.

And after all the playing is done, some toys make the best pillow.

4 weeks old weights

I haven't been able to compare the weights of this litter to the weights of the last litter at this age because my old postage scales only went up to just over 2 kg and by this age most of the puppies have reached that weight. Needless to say, when I needed to buy new postage scales for work I made sure they would be more suitable for weighing puppies. Makes sense, no?

Here's the usual picture followed by the numbers.

At this point everybody wants to know which puppy they are going to have. They need to know. Yes, you might even say they have a right to know. Do the owners-to-be of these puppies know? Er, know. I mean, no.

I always make it clear to everyone right from the beginning that they won't really be given a choice of which puppy they will get. If someone wants a specific colour or sex, that's fine. We discuss and agree that long before any puppies are even born. But apart from those considerations, I call the shots when it comes to placing puppies with the right families. The reason I call the shots is this: I know the puppies and I make it my business to get to know the puppies' new families and so I know who will be best suited to whom.*

I just haven't figured that out with this bunch yet.

I do have an excuse for taking so long to decide, and this is it: the puppies' personalities are only starting to develop now. They are just learning to play and interact with us, each other and their toys. They are learning what their teeth are for. It will be a while before it will be clear which is the absolute naughtiest one that will be moving back home with Taika...

And as for which ones will be suitable for the show ring. Yikes, that's a tough call even for very experienced breeders. I'm just guessing here, really. In the past I have found that my best guesses have always been made at 5 weeks of age, not 4. So at this stage all I'm guessing is that at the 5-week update the puppies will have the names that have been chosen for them by their new families.

As they say, watch this space.

I've got some cute videos & photos of the puppies settling into their palatial new downstairs pen which I'll sort out & post later.

*Do not criticise my grammar, people, I beg you. I have no idea how to use who & whom - and I'm not convinced that the word 'whom' is even necessary in the normal run of things. So many words in English are quite obsolete these days, I find. However, it's nice to throw a 'whom' in there from time to time just to see who's paying attention.

4 weeks old

Usually at this point I would present perfect pictures of puppies sitting prettily and also standing strong & square. Who am I trying to kid? The evidence to the contrary of "strong & square" lives on this very blog. How is it anyone ever gets those perfect standing photos, anyway? Because, I assure you that they do. I don't, but 'they' do. Perhaps I should invite 'them' over?

So, for now, I have only sitting and very poor standing shots to offer - and there's 2 missing, at that. It's been a bit of a lovely mad weekend full of visitors so I haven't even weighed them yet today. As for trimming their claws - forget it. Rest assured I will keep on trying... and as soon as I get something better to show you, you'll be the very first to know.

2Toes only sitting on this occasion - frankly it was quite a feat to get her to stay still for even that long. See how fluffy she's getting around her ears already?

2Tone sorta half-sitting then standing (again, sorta)

Grey Wolf does a great sitting pose and is pretty good at standing too (well, getting ready to walk away, anyhow)

Dino is excellent at sitting. Standing? Not so much. You can even see his eyes in this one, which makes a nice change.

Butterfly sitting only - and with a terrible backgound. I think I have a standing photo of her as well. On the other hand, it might be 2Toes. Must do better.

remiss

I know, I know, I know you've all been getting very impatient waiting for updates. I know this because I'm getting so many hits on the blog everyday, and I have no doubt that many of them are duplicates as people keep checking back for new photos & vids. Sincerely sorry for the delay, but it's hectic as all get-out around here. Truly. 4 meals a day, clean out the box twice a day, launder the puppy mats and towels twice a day, and wash all the puppy plates, walk the other dogs - and that's just the dog-related chores.

On top of that there's all the MP lobbying to be done on non-dog-related things. Although, there are dog-related things that crop up from time to time that we need to address, like new Dog Control orders that in some areas have been downright draconian. But with the looming election I feel it's my civic duty to shout my opinion at anyone who has been voted into a listening position.

Oh yeah, and I'm supposed to be working as well.

Let me have a little root around and see if I can find a photo or two with which to offer you some entertainment today...

It's not so easy for puppies to hide under the mat these days.

Getting ready for the big weekend relocation from the whelping room (soon to revert to its former status as junk room) to the puppy pen in the living room. Neka & Keskiyo will be very excited to see the puppies arrive in their domain. Maija hasn't shown much interest in all the little sounds from upstairs - she's more an easy-come-easy-go sorta girl. It will be interesting to see what she thinks of them.

The first of the puppy visitors arrive this weekend too. Is it that time already?

teeth & attention

The puppies' teeth have been coming through little by little during the week. Here is someone (2Toes, maybe?) showing hers off.

And a little more evidence of the puppies' determination to break the chains that bind them (i.e. climb outta the box).

Don't ask who's who! Altho that's 2Tone on his back & Grey Wolf on the right

And, finally, an adorable illustration of how they interact with people now. When you (or in this instance, Jay) look into the box they all come and pay very close attention just in case you're going to do something good. What they're expecting, I have no idea. But it's quite sweet.

3 weeks old weights

Here's the chart showing how the noisy little horrors have grown over their first 3 weeks. Looking back over the blog archive, I see I was calling the last litter the very same unflattering name at about this age. It's good to know they all have good, strong, healthy lungs. Uh huh.

Everyone is still growing well, although Dino is really taking off, already topping 2 kg at weigh-in today and Butterfly seems to be tailing off a little. I'll be sure to encourage her to get maximum time at the food plate and milk bar from now on.

Here's the comparison of the average weight per litter.

Looks like this 5 are growing bigger faster than the Devon Nine. But, then again, no one in the last litter took quite so well to eating solid food so early either. Check them out tucking in followed by the usual little game. My battery died as Grey Wolf keeled over trying to climb out. Beware: cuteness alert!

3 weeks old

I'm suffering from my traditional early-April back trouble, so very quickie update for all you addicts. Here are the 3-week-old portraits. I have yet to weight them - or, indeed, cut their nails today. But after another spell with my heat pad I'm sure I'll be able to acquire more stuff for tomorrow.

trouble

Oh, here we go - still a whole week before moving downstairs to the big pen with high, safe, unscaleable sides, and no less than 3 of the puppies have made a bid for freedom already. Butterfly has a good technique and almost made it:

2Toes also had a go:

And the third puppy to try? One of the boys, perhaps? Maybe Dino? After all, at this stage he can practically step easily over the side of that box. But, no. The boys are behaving like little angels - not a bit of trouble from either of them. It's all the girls, of course; Grey Wolf was the other one to attempt escape. However, she's not quite big enough to reach properly so didn't teeter on the lip long enough for a photo. No doubt it won't be long, though.

I don't know who it was who last night got stuck by the armpits hanging on the lip of the box, but there was almighty screaming until she was rescued. Did she learn her lesson? Clearly not.

Weight updates and new pics tomorrow. In the meantime, here are a few cuties taken at various times during the week.

weaning

We've had an eventful ride so far, Taika, these puppies & I. I never knew whether Taika was going to wash her paws of the babies and depart, leaving me to it. Then there was the worry that she wasn't producing enough milk. But by the time of the 2-week milestone, I realised that all was finally well. Taika had learned her job and was performing it well (if a teeny bit begrudgingly). She was cheerful, enjoying her walks but also hurrying back to the pups whenever she heard them squeak. The puppies were growing fast & fat and developing just as they should. I no longer needed to provide extra milk for anyone nor did I have to do the bottom licking anymore. Ahhh, at last I could relax and enjoy the whole experience. Apart from the worming, of course, which the puppies & I 'enjoy' alike.

And it was a nice 3 days while it lasted.

I think the puppies are growing teeth because Taika has started giving them a speedy feed, an even speedier wash and then hopping straight out of the box again. And there have been complaints. Loud ones. I think they're still hungry, so it's time to break out the weaning stuff.

In the past, on recommendation, I've always used Pedigree Puppy Porridge, which is great stuff. It comes in a 2kg tub of powder that you mix with water into a milky paste of the desired consistency, gradually getting thicker as the puppies learn to eat. Then they eventually graduate to softened puppy kibble. But I've been having difficulty finding a supplier with the porridge in stock and for a few terrible days I feared Pedigree had stopped making it around about the time they yanked their public support for dog shows. But no, they do still support breeders - just not in a public way. That's fine by me just so long as I can get that great porridge.

There were other brands of similar-sounding stuff available, but the last thing I wanted to do was risk using an untried product. What if it upset their digestion again? No, no, no.

So, while I'm waiting for the Pedigree tub to turn up, I've started in the labour-intensive manner. First, soak a few pieces of Arden Grange Weaning/Puppy food in just-boiled water. Some soften quicker than others. Some never do, fish them out. Mash up softened kibble with a fork until mush. Next, make up some Lactol milk and get it to the right temperature. Combine. Give to puppies.

The first meal wasn't very successful. I used a plate which had 2 major problems: (1) the stuff stayed in the middle of the plate and the puppies can only reach the edge of the plate; and (2) such a little amount of milky mush gets cold very quickly on a plate. Not appetising for puppies. The second meal was much more successful. These puppies are smart! They caught on straight away. I tried to take a video of them all eating (some from the plate, some from each other) but my primary concern was keeping the food coming, so the video didn't turn out very well. So I had another quick attempt after a couple of the puppies had given up. What are they eating from? The lid of the empty Lactol can.

Don't miss the growl at about 30 seconds.

And may I say what a relief it is to get my internet connection back after 48 hours beyond the pale. I guess BT were threatening not to reconnect us until Sunday or Monday just so we'd be grateful beyond complaint when they got us back online earlier than threatened. Phew! Quite apart from my blog & Facebook addictions, there is the small matter of the financial year-end for work. I really, really need online access to my work computer at the moment.

playtime

Oh, you lucky people! I just happened to be puttering around in the puppy room yesterday when they had their very first group play session. And Jay just happened to be conveniently next door and able to pass me the video camera.

Enjoy!

In case you are wondering where Taika was during all this, she was watching from the safety of her spot outside the box. There is an occasional glimpse of her ears & nose on the right.

2 weeks old weights

As Ian said on yesterday's update - they sure are growing fast. Here are their weights at 2 weeks old together with birth weight and last week's update followed by the chart - ta-da!

I look at these numbers and they don't really mean much to me, except that the weights are not quite doubling each week and all puppies reached 1 kg or more by the age of 2 weeks. Simple-minded, maybe, but I like to see things in picture form (double-click for a bigger, clearer view):

Just for fun, I dug out the weights of Neka's first litter (Taika's family) for comparison purposes. And it just proved that birth weight bears little resemblance to litter size or eventual adult size. Neka's first litter - Taika's family - was 7 puppies and the average weight for the litter was lowest of all even though all the puppies grew to a good size, including Taika & her sister Keksi, both of whom are actually bigger than Neka.

The second litter - Maija's family, the 'Monta' litter - was 9 puppies and so I really expected the average litter weight to be much lower than the first litter. But, no, it was higher. And the majority of those puppies grew up to be on the smaller side, including Maija who we affectionately call our 'miniature Lapphund'.

And this litter who I am calling the 'Tuisku' litter - higher again, although I was thinking that some if not all of these puppies would also be somewhat small, given their sire's compact form. Not that anyone expects Dino or 2Toes to ever be mistaken for a miniature Lapphund when they grow up.

Unfortunately I can't find the weight information past the birth weight for the first litter, but here is a chart showing the relative average weight per litter. Useful? Not particularly. Interesting? Well, I think so.

And now, because you have been so patient wading through all this stuff, here is your reward: a video showing Butterfly and 2Toes taking their time to settle down this morning. In this one little video you get puppies crawling, puppies walking around (or should I say staggering), some barking and other cute noises, puppy discovering the water bowl, and pay attention at about 40 seconds when poor little Butterfly gets startled. I can't figure out whether she barks & gives herself a fright or whether it's 2Tone next to her squawking in his sleep. Either way, it's funny stuff. Unfortunately you also get a bit of unsteady camera holding from yours truly as I try to sort out the light. Sorry 'bout that.

Next I must capture evidence of them barking & growling like they were this morning when I was cleaning the box - quite hilarious.

poll result

So I finally got you! Or the puppies did, anyway. Although Dino was third to open his eyes, the first 2 were actually the twos: 2Toes and 2Tone. Of course, they are all blinking at the world now and I really must get a video of one or two of them trundling around the box crashing into things as they learn to master their legs, because that's the cutest thing ever.

In the meantime I'll think up another poll. I had a message from Stéphanie to say that she was voting for the puppies having their father's head - just in case I was going to run a poll on that. For some reason the message disappeared without publishing, so sorry about that on behalf of Blogger.

I could run a poll on who made the biggest mess when I tried to worm them for the first time today. That won't work as a poll, though, because they all made an enormous mess. Poor little things. They expect only yummy stuff (i.e. Lactol puppy milk) to come from syringes inserted into their little mouths. They get quite a shock when it actually delivers wormer. Apparently it tastes pretty bad. So they have told me, anyway.

More cute photos tomorrow & maybe a video if I get good light in the morning.
