Tarkka at home

My evil plan worked and I successfully managed to guilt Jo into sending me a photo of Tarkka. Heh. Thanks Jo!

Here is the handsome boy munching on a plant pot.

Maija at home / Tarkka at home

Quick update on Maija. We had intended to do a family portrait to tie in with the photos of all the other puppies leaving home. Did we manage to find the time/energy/photographer for the task? Well, no. But we are ever hopeful and might accomplish something before she grows completely out of her puppyhood.

In the meantime, here are a few shots of Maija as new top dog of our house. First, here she is cuddled up with Lenny, enjoying her last few remaining days of being allowed on the sofa.

And, having a game with mum Neka. Neka has always been the master of games, gentle and patient with all manner of puppies, tireless with her friends. I'm hoping she passes on her games skills to Maija. Keskiyo also loves to play with Maija, but his idea of a game is a bit more steal-the-toy-and-run-like-hell. Except when he's rolling around on his back with Maija on his chest. Very sweet and apparently impossible to capture on film.

Tug!

Displaying her famous super pouncing skills:

If you look closely you just might be able to see the state of Neka's raggedy coat as she's now in full-on post-whelping moult which will, in 2 or 3 weeks, result in her skin gleaming pinkly through the last dusting of remaining hair. If you can't make out the clumps of fur hanging off her flanks, then you can certainly see the effect on my carpet! It's a 4-times-a-day vacuum time now. Do I vacuum 4 times a day? Of course not. In my house, the carpet is lucky to see the sucking end of the vacuum once a day. Hence the grey, furry carpet.

On Wednesday Maija and I went visiting in Plymouth to see Jo and Tarkka. Jo seems to be saving all her puppy photos for the SFLS calendar and Tarkka's own blog, so in order to see how he is developing you'll need to go see him there. In the meantime, here is a very short video of the remaining Devon Two gallivanting in Tarkka's garden. How alike they still are! You can spot Tarkka because he's the one with a little bling hanging from his collar - his fabulous new bone-shaped id tag. You can spot Maija because she's the one scampering and pouncing like a maniac. Nothing new there then.

Tarmo at home

Here are some cute pics of Tarmo at his new home in Surrey with Stacey & Shane. I'm loving his one-ear-up-one-ear-down look!

and 1 makes 5

This is a tough weekend. By tomorrow afternoon we will be left with only one puppy! Where did the 8 weeks go?

The Taylor family (minus dad - we can't all play with puppies, someone has to do some work - or so I keep telling Jay) drove 250-ish miles from Lancashire yesterday. After some puppy time we all went out for a quick bite to eat (Madelaine where did you put that enormous ice cream?) Then they were off bright and early this morning. Here they are with a very sleepy Jaska who I kept waking up to make sure he would good and tired for the long drive to his new home.

Keep checking back to see photos of him with his new big sister, Kia.

Tonight we'll be waving goodbye to Tarkka and Inko.

the dogs - 6 weeks

Tarmo
What I love best about this guy (apart from his enormous white paws, of course) is the way he zooms over to say hello with his ears flat back and his tail wagging him off his feet.

Jaska
My favorite thing about him right now is his big smile, tongue hanging out, when he's playing. Also, he's so heavy that he's very cuddly and squishable.

Rauhan
I love the beautiful tan markings on this boy making him look so much like his handsome dad. He's the fearless boy who went off to happily meet the school kids in the park, even mustering a little wag for them.

Tarkka
I love his cheeky expression and how clever he is. He was the first to learn his name and, of course, he invents all the best games.

the dogs - 5 weeks old

My talented friend Pia took some amazing photos of Toni's Border Collie puppies. Sadly, I have neither the baby blankets nor the patience to attempt such photos of my puppies, although they deserve it... and I'm certain they would be every bit as cute as BCs!

And, hell, I certainly don't have the time. Folks, I could not even manage to get any standing poses today.

There will be no weight updates tomorrow, alas, as I've been weighing the pups on my postage scales and they don't go much beyond 2 kgs.

So, at last, given below for your ooh-ing and aah-ing pleasure are the boys at 5 weeks (and their proper names) and the girls below that. All the puppies have the special middle name 'Monta', meaning 'many' in Finnish in honour of being the largest litter of Lapphunds ever born in the UK.

Tarmo - formerly known as Big A
A lovely sounding name I nicked from Paula & Adam (thanks, guys) which I think suits the Big Guy. Although he was never as heavy as Suck Monster, he has always been the biggest. Our gentle giant who watches all the madness going on around him and sits up on his hind legs to bat at your fingers with his enormous white paws. The best wagger in the bunch.

Jaska - formerly known as Suck Monster
The heaviest boy of all, noted for his bright white toes and handsome face markings. Our clever boy who very quickly learned that yapping would get all faces turned in his direction. Yeah, we're trying to discourage that behaviour now... such a clever puppy should have no problem learning to be more quiet...

Rauhan - formerly known as Chew
The small boy who has lots of tan face markings like his dad. Born with his knee in his mouth, he still likes to chew his own feet. We hope he'll leave this little habit behind when he goes off into the world. Looks for the world like a little bear when he's on his back with paws waving in the air and ears flapping.

Tarkka - formerly known as Right Paw and Little Arrow
The monkey whose antics are out-naughtied only by Maija. Has learned to jump up onto the box they play with and stands up there taking swipes at all comers as the girls try to knock him off. Likes to pull the corner of the vet bed over him to sleep covered up.

the dogs - 4 weeks

Here are the boys. See the post with the pics of the bitches for the usual caveat regarding poor photography! Next week I should have my better camera up and running.

Here are the 3-week-old photos. Thanks to Jay for stepping in and holding the little squirmers on all the best pics. The ropier ones are me struggling through by myself.

one week old - dogs

Happy one-week birthday to the boys! Here are the new photos. I'm pretty sure these are the right ones, but I wouldn't put any money on that just yet.

name change

I hope you weren't too attached to the name 'Little Arrow', or indeed 'Little A'. It's becoming increasingly clear that I've mixed up one or two puppies one or two times. I know, I know, it's hard to believe, isn't it, since they're all so individual looking!

I confess to apparently failing to photograph Big A on the day of his birth because that photo is clearly Flash. In my defense, they were very similar! Ok, so I have no defense, really. No excuses, I messed up.

Having carefully named Little & Big A, I have since realized that S-Monster also has an arrow and that Little A's most notable feature is not his arrow but the fact that he has one white boot on the front. Henceforth, he will be called Right Paw. And if I ever figure out a way to properly identify Big A, I will do so.

So, for clarification, here are new pics:

the boys

Boy 1 - Puppy number 2
Nickname: Big Arrow

Named for the white flash down his chest & belly. Just look at that flashy white face! He was the biggest puppy, just.

Born: 9:37 am
Weight at Birth: 366 g

Boy 2 - Puppy number 3
Nickname: Suck Monster

A bit of a mean name for an adorable 1-minute-old puppy, perhaps? But he popped out, Neka removed his bag & umbilical cord and he stuck straight onto a nipple and it took both my hands to prise him off in order to dry him! Such a determined little guy has to do well in life, don't you think? Looks like he'll be a good tricolour with plenty of his dad's rich tan.

Born: 10:03 am
Weight at Birth: 360 g

Boy 3 - Puppy number 5
Nickname: Chew

He came out full of energy and I think he even broke his own bag. He must have been very impatient to get to the milk bar, though, because as I picked him up to dry him off, I noticed he was chewing on his own arm! Hungry little guy. Sorry for the terrible photo, but he's still our little rocket and won't keep still for 2 seconds, so I'll try harder for the next pic. This is our true black & tan boy with markings exactly like his dad.

Born: 10:38 am
Weight at Birth: 320 g

Boy 4 - Puppy number 8
Nickname: Little Arrow

With markings so much like the first boy, you can see how we struggled at first to tell them apart. However, this boy has more tan in his face markings. Super white toes!

Born: 12 noon
Birth weight: 365 g
