happy birthday

-->
L-R: Taika, Taito, Karhu, Koda, Diesel, Torvi, Keksi

Ten years ago today – a very special day, as it was the day that Neka gave birth to our very first litter of puppies.  Stoic as she was, and inexperienced as I was, I didn’t see the signs that they were on their way and so I left her snoozing on the sofa when I made the 20-minute round trip to pick up Jay from the park & ride on his way home from work.  When we got back she had gutted the sofa cushions, leaving chunks of foam all over the floor.  Ah, that would be the "nesting" that I had read about, then.

Pretty soon I noticed she was grunting, and a quick phone call to a more experienced friend confirmed that this was certainly contractions, so we retired to the whelping box in the back room.

I cannot now remember how long I had to wait for the first puppy to arrive, nor how long it all took for the 7 to arrive.  I do have notes filed away of the event, but sadly there was no blog in those days, so when an old computer died without a backup a few years ago I lost most of my photos of this litter (back up your computers, people!).

But I have a few.

I was hoping to have a reunion for this milestone birthday, but with one of the gang in Scotland awaiting the imminent arrival of a new human baby brother or sister, and a family member of another out of the country at the moment, it was never going to happen.

These dogs are a great bunch of characters – good-natured, friendly & easy-going, occasionally lazy & stubborn, blessed with excellent health & good looks.  Very happy 10th birthday to the oldies, and many happy returns, in birth order, as always:

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention all the special families who have loved and cared for these fabulous dogs for the past 9 years and 10 months:  the Goldens, Wilsons, Gilmours, Groveses, McCarthys, Spencer-McGinleys and Gileses – with special mention of Steve Giles who loved Torvi so much and who sadly died earlier this year.  Thank you everyone for 10 great years.

happy birthday to the veterans

Well, well, well.  A few months ago I had the shock of realising that my puppy dog Neka had somehow reached the age of 10 years while I had my back turned.  Even greater than that, though, is to find that today her (and my) first litter of puppies turn 7 years old and become officially veterans.

It really doesn't feel like 7 years since I first read The Book of Bitch cover to cover (3 times) in preparation for what was to come.  Nor does it seem like 7 years since I sat up 3 nights in a row with an increasingly-restless Neka as we both steeled ourselves for the big new adventure.  And it doesn't seem like 7 years since Neka shredded the sofa cushion, leaving the foam in chunks all over the floor, so that she had a nice comfy nest to give birth in.  (Don't worry - I did move her upstairs to her brand new and shiny whelping box.  I was just a bit tardy in doing so, apparently.)  These days I am much more in tune to the grunting of a bitch whose contractions have started.

So a very happy birthday to my gorgeous firstborns and the very first Infindigo veterans, in birth order, as always, at 7 weeks and 7 years (or as close to 7 years as I have).  I was a bit slow to request new pics of the new veterans, so if I get some more up-to-date photos, I'll update the blog post too.

fright

Sometimes your Lappy gives you a big fright.

When Neka was about 8 months old, I was walking alone with her on a rather lonely and unfamiliar heath.  We happened upon a lady with a pack of greyhounds that we knew from ringcraft training and so while the humans chatted, Neka played with the greyhounds.  Then, suddenly, I heard Neka yelp, and when I turned around to see what the problem was, she was nowhere to be seen.  The 4 greyhounds were milling around, and I waited a minute thinking she was in the midst of them and would pop out any second.  But she didn't.  She had apparently just disappeared into thin air.

I spent a frantic 45 minutes searching the heath for her, calling her name, calling for help, and I even checked under the bushes all around the area for holes that she might have fallen down.  All to no avail.  She was nowhere and I didn't know what to do.

The greyhound lady helped look for a while, but then she had to leave.  10 minutes later she returned with Neka on a lead.  She had found her in the car park, circling my car and barking.  That was the first, heart-stopping, time that Neka returned to the car during a walk for some reason, but unfortunately it wasn't the last.

As Neka got older and I got more experienced, I stopped panicking quite so much on the handful occasions that she disappeared.  As long as I knew we were a long way from a road, I didn't worry too much because Neka would invariably make her way back to me after she had finished chasing the deer, following an irresistible scent, or just noseying about in the woods.  On a couple of occasions she did return to the car - and what's fascinating about those times is that she would get to the car approximately the time we should be getting to the car if we hadn't stayed in the woods waiting for her.  You see?  Lappies are just too clever.

And, thankfully, they are so clever.

A few weeks ago I had a call saying that Sybil, one of Maija's sisters, had gone missing from a walk.  The animal protection people of the area contacted the Lapphund club to get some information about the breed and the club contacted me.  It's good to have a strong network.

Anyway, I got straight on the phone and got the details.  Sybil's owner had gone away on holiday, leaving the two Lappies in his brother, Nick's care.  On a walk one day, Sybil took fright and ran away and by the time I got in contact, she had been gone for more than 24 hours.  Of course, Nick was beside himself.  He was worried about Sybil and what could happen to her, and he was worried about what his brother would do when he found out that one of his precious dogs was lost.

Everyday I was on the phone with Nick, checking for updates, and I bombarded him with text messages everytime I thought of another avenue he could pursue in trying to find her.  One thing that occurred to me was that if she was afraid, then she might only be moving around in the night time so I suggested that Nick leave the garden gate open at night and when he went out.  That way if Sybil came home in the middle of the night, she would have a safe place to go.

The next morning - 5 days after going missing - when Nick got up, there was Sybil in the back garden.  The clever little thing had found her way back home.

There are several morals to this tale, apart from illustrating how clever Lappies can be.  Not least of all is the whole kennel issue.  You may think that it is cruel to leave your dog in a kennel when you go away.  For Sybil's older brother, whose health isn't great, a kennel wasn't an option.  But for most Lappies, a kennel is a perfectly acceptable - and very safe - holiday home.

Furthermore, this story gives me a great excuse to bang on about my pet subject: puppy socialisation.  The very best insurance you can give to ensure that your adult dog is confident, independent and fearless in the face of new challenges is to give him adequate socialisation as a young puppy.  Everyone who has an Infindigo Lappy has had it drilled into them until they are quite sick of me:  these lessons that puppies learn during their first crucial weeks will set them up for the rest of their lives.  It's that important.  And you never get that time back.

It was a bit of an extreme way to get them, but I took full advantage of the situation and used Sybil's crisis to get a few up-to-date photos of her.  No, I didn't have her kidnapped.  Honest.

With her brother Basil

 In other news...

With a mere week-and-a-bit to go, here is how the belly is looking today.

For the purposes of comparison, this is what Keksi looked like carrying 7 with one week to go.  Tuuli is still a half-week or so away from this stage, but you get an idea.

And this is Neka carrying 9 with one week to go.

I dare say Tuuli is rather pleased she's not carrying 9.  I'm certainly pleased that she's not.

happy 6th birthday

... to Neka's first litter, the 7 gorgeous puppies she had by Elbereth Kimmi.  In one way, it's hard to believe it has already been 6 years since my first litter of Finnish Lapphund puppies was born.  In another way, so much has happened with me & the dogs since then that 6 years doesn't seem like very long at all.

At any rate, these dogs are now fully-fledged adults, fully-developed in body and coat and in the prime of their lives.  They are all beautiful to look at, healthy and all with the most wonderful gentle and sweet characters.  To date, Taika has become a mum, Keksi has become a mum - twice, Taito is hopefully soon to become a dad, and Karhu is an increasingly famous model using his stage name "Mr K" on Thankfifi and elsewhere.  Torvi, Koda and Diesel are beloved pets with no additional jobs other than being adored.

Happy birthday, firstborns!  I'm so very proud of you all.

And here's how unbelievably cute they were at 6 - 7 weeks.

Mikko growing up

The last of the puppy updates falls to Mikko.  He is a boy who, right from the earliest days, looked so much like his mum - he's exactly the same colour and also with Keksi's sweet expression.  I dare say he will grow into a big brown bear of a boy too.

You can tell my his knobby knees that he has a lot of growing to do yet - and filling out.

Sweet boy with his well-worn bear (or whatever it was...)

Loves tennis balls, like all Lappies.

In a few days the puppies will turn 6 months old and then a whole new world of experience starts for them and their owners.  For the girls, it's hormones, hormones, hormones with their impending first seasons and perhaps a bit of moodiness from time to time.  For the boys, it's... well, hormones too, as they start to realise what the opposite sex is all about.   There might be some humping.  Er, possibly a lot of humping.  I always recommend to everyone to treat youthful humping just like any other unwanted behaviour - nip it in the bud.  Firmly and quickly.

They all will settle into their adult height over the next couple of months, and they will slowly start to mature and fill out.  They will lose their puppy coats and grow a new one.  And in about a month from now, they will all start to find their feet and try out a little more independence.  Time for owners to be vigilant and strict with the training.  The formerly well-behaved puppies will morph into monsters for a few months, by comparison.  Deep breaths, lots of training, and maintain your nerve and they will all come out the other end.  Eventually.

5th birthday

L-R: Taika, Torvi, Keksi, Taito, Koda, Diesel, Karhu

Wow, 5 years already since Neka and I had our first litter of puppies.  On the 13th of June we wished very happy birthdays to Kultainen (aka Koda), Taika, Pikkukarhu (aka Karhu, aka Mr K), Seppo (aka Diesel), Taito, Keksi and Tuuri (aka Torvi).  Although, I have to say that although the owners of those fabulous first Infindigo dogs are saying "five, already!?" to tell you the truth, I'm saying "only five!?"  Because a lot has happened to me and and my dogs in those 5 years - that was even before the birth of the blog.  Eons ago, surely!  There have been 4 more litters since then, for example.  27 more puppies.

But, back in the day, here's how cute that first litter were.  In these photos they are 5-6 weeks old.

Keksi goes home

Remember a while ago I gave a plug to a fashion blog featuring Karhu & Wendy?  Right now, before you do another thing, go out and buy a copy of this month's Look magazine.  Well, you can wait until after you've read my blog, obviously.  And, ok, maybe not if you're a guy.  And perhaps it can wait until tomorrow, if it must.  But as soon as you get your copy (it's the one with Alesha Dixon on the cover), turn to page 64 to see none other than Karhu & Wendy!

Here's a sliver of a peak:

Looking somewhat less than model-perfect these days is Karhu's sister, Keksi.  Her fur is falling out in truly alarming amounts and she's skinny beyond recognition.  It's all normal stuff for this period after the puppies have been weaned and she'll get even worse before she gets better.  A couple of weeks of good walks will get her muscle tone back in business, and by the time the puppies are 6 months old, she will be looking her normal shiny, healthy self with a brand new coat.

In the meantime, here's how she looked today before going off back home to Daniel, Jim, Ismo & Kuura:

Everyone was glad to see her:

Tuuli will miss Keksi for sure, but I don't think the puppies have noticed she's gone.  They're just waiting patiently for their sardine-improved dinner.
