Kaija went through a little phase of picking up a puppy from time to time and chucking it out of the box. We found 2 or 3 of them under Jay's desk. Then it occurred to us that other dogs who came to visit and have their puppies had a kind of hood over the whelping box to give them a greater feeling of security. So this is the last photo of her without the sheet draped over the top. I am delighted to report that since we did that, she has been much more settled and is no longer trying to relocate to under the desk.
You can also see how she rucks up the vet bed at every opportunity. Frequently we find puppies buried underneath or caught up in folds. What seems really unfair is when she digs up the vet bed to make a comfy nest for herself and leaves the puppies scrabbling around on the paper. I'm pretty sure she's not the first to do either of those things. In fact, I'm pretty sure they almost all do those things.
The puppies started out tiny, but they have been doing really well and are all gaining weight steadily. At the end of their first week I will be expecting them all to have at least doubled in weight since their birth.
In the meantime, here is a selection of photos showing what the puppies have been up to this week. You can see, perhaps, how I managed to mistake the brownies for blackies. You can also see the differences in colour between the two brown dominos. When they were born, Dizzy was much the paler of the two, but now he's a bit darker and a distinctly warmer brown colour than Duke.
